It’s been over 75 years since Wonder Woman first appeared in the world in DC Comics’ All-Star Comics series. Since then, the warrior princess has become a symbol of strength, courage, and compassion to fans all over the world.
This year, the well-known comic book character celebrates 75 years. To celebrate, we’re looking back at some interesting facts you might not know about the character’s most famous adaptation: the 1970s TV series.
1. She even performed some of her stunts.
Carter was fearless. She had a stunt double but sometimes had to perform under pressure. While filming a helicopter stunt for the season two episode “Anschluss 77,” it became clear that the double didn’t look like Carter in the shot. So Carter decided to do it herself and held on to the aircraft as it lifted 50 feet in the air.
2. She invented the Wonder Woman spin.
In 2005, Carter told Entertainment Weekly that she had made the move. She says her background in dancing helped her think of it. “They couldn’t figure out how I would make the change,” she said of the network. “So I said, ‘I can do a pirouette or a spin.'”
3. She had auditioned for the role of Wonder Woman before.
It seems like Wonder Woman was a role she was born to play. The actress tried out for the role in a 1974 TV movie, but the part was ultimately given to Cathy Lee Crosby. Carter was fine about not getting the job.
4. She didn’t have much money when she finally got the part.
After the unsuccessful 1974 audition, Carter beat out 2,000 other women to land the role of Wonder Woman a year later. When the producers called to say she had the part, Carter had $25 in her bank account.
5. She prefers the Wonder Woman from the 1970s.
The first season of Wonder Woman is set in the 1940s, which was expensive for the network to produce. After the first season, the show was moved to a different network, and the setting was changed to the present to save money. This worked because Wonder Woman ages slowly.
6. She also tried out the latest trends.
Carter was into the latest trends, especially if that meant attracting a younger audience. In the show’s third season, Wonder Woman even skateboards and rides motorcycles. In the first episode of that season, the hero even saves a pop idol and his twin brother, who Leif Garrett plays. The producers must have hoped that having two Leif Garretts would make the show more popular.
7. She cared about the crew members.
Wonder Woman is a symbol of courage and compassion. Carter had already shown she dared to perform her stunts, but she also showed compassion. When the son of stunt double Jeannie Epper told his classmates at school that his mom was Wonder Woman, they laughed at him. When Carter heard about this, she invited the whole class to visit the set so they could see Epper in action as the superhero.
8. She almost wore a bikini.
A bikini would make Wonder Woman more popular with viewers, but it’s not the most practical choice for a superhero. The show’s costume designer originally designed a red, white, and blue bikini for the character to wear in the water. However, the production team gave the actress a full-body wetsuit when the suit didn’t stay on properly during filming.
