The first few hours of the flight were perfect: calm skies, smooth seas, easy conversation in the cockpit between two experienced pilots who had long trusted each other with their lives. Jamie mentally noted that today was his hundredth flight. Everything was going smoothly.
Suddenly, a red light began to blink on the instrument panel. Jamie and Noah noticed it at the same time.
Noah pressed the pedals – there was no response.
“The rudder is not responding,” he said in an even voice, although the air was already tense.
Jamie took a deep breath and picked up the microphone:
– “Mayday, mayday, mayday. This is Gulf Seaway five-nine,” he said, trying not to let his voice break. “Lost rudder control, forced to land on the water. Coordinates …”
He quickly dictated the data, and Noah, adjusting the flaps, began to descend.
The landing was rough: two short bounces, and the floats crashed into the water, causing the entire plane to shake.
There was silence. The seaplane rocked gently on the waves.
“The Coast Guard has received a signal,” Jamie said, checking the radio. “The nearest boat will be here in three hours.”
Noah nodded, and Jamie wondered where the currents might carry them. But suddenly, he noticed two long, narrow shapes appear in the distance, gliding swiftly and confidently across the water.
“It’s not the Coast Guard,” Noah said grimly, looking through his binoculars.
“Then who?” Jamie asked.
“Pirates.”
“We need to move,” Noah said sharply, stepping on the gas. But the damaged plane moved slowly, like a wounded sea animal.
With every moment, the alien boats were getting closer. The men on board were shouting, waving their arms, and pointing at the plane.
“If they get up there, we’re done for,” Jamie said quietly.
“Close all the hatches and lock the doors,” Noah said. “Buy time.”
One boat went around, and the other went straight to the locked door. Jamie stood by the pile of boxes that were leaning against the door and saw a shadow outside through the small window.
The lock clicked. The cabin door swung open, and three wet, cloth-wrapped men rushed in. The tall one pointed at Jamie and shouted something unintelligible.
They were tied up, their wrists tied tightly behind their backs. Two more pirates were already hauling cargo out of the plane.
When Jamie tried to back away, he tripped and his elbow hit the throttle, and his back hit the large red switch with the inscription “AUX EMERGENCY”. The siren howled so loudly that the pirates flinched.
A moment later, Jamie and Noah were dragged into the boat. But a low, drawn-out horn cut through the noise of the wind. Then another.
A white boat with a blue stripe was moving quickly on the horizon — the Coast Guard. The pirates noticed it and became agitated. One dropped a box, another fell overboard, and a third could not start the engine.
“This is the Coast Guard! Drop your weapons!” a powerful voice rang out over the loudspeaker.
A few minutes later, it was all over: the pirates were detained, the stolen goods were returned, and the battered seaplane was still floating in the water.
Later, already on the deck of the boat, wrapped in warm blankets, Jamie exhaled deeply:
“Well, well… the hundredth flight.”
Noah smiled faintly:
“Yeah, it didn’t go according to plan.” “But we’re alive,” Jamie replied, looking at the stars.
