How to stop cats shitting in the garden: five simple tips

Do you want a simple solution to stop cats from shitting in the garden? Our furry friends are great company, but it can annoy us when they use the garden as a toilet.

Tips such as not offering them food to discourage them from coming back, watering flower beds since cats don’t like wet soil, and covering garden areas with rocks and pebbles since they prefer soft surfaces can be helpful.

Here are some practical tips on how to get rid of cats using your garden as toilets.

Odor repellent

Cats are known for exploring other people’s gardens, looking for places to leave their mark while their owners aren’t looking. One natural way to keep them from impacting your lawn is to scatter scents they don’t like.

Cats are susceptible to scents, so strong scents like lavender, peppermint, or cinnamon deter them. Please choose one of these scents, mix it with water, and spray it around the garden. Although this is only a short-term option, it is cost-effective and non-toxic.

Install a motion-activated sprinkler

This option may be more expensive than the others, but it is incredibly effective. Cats hate getting wet, so if you’re sick of cats, you should consider installing a sprinkler that turns on every time it detects movement and heat from the animal.

Every time a cat comes into your garden, the sprinkler releases a sudden stream of water and makes a startling sound, scaring it away.

I am using sound motion detectors

Like water sprinklers work, ultrasonic cat repellents emit very high-frequency sounds when they detect movement. These sounds are usually very unpleasant for cats but virtually inaudible to humans.

Cover the garden with branches

Cats don’t like prickly ground underfoot, so place twigs or rough leaves in your flower beds to deter them. While this may not beautify your garden, it’s an easy solution to keep them at bay.

You can also use stone mulch, eggshells, cuttings of holly, or used plastic rugs.

Make flower beds less inviting places

Cats like soft spots with plenty of room to dig when they go to the bathroom, so there are a few things you can do to keep them from using your garden for this purpose.

Place twigs around beds to make soft soil a less inviting place to the toilet, or use eggshells, which also become a com-post. You can also place plants closer together so the cat has less room to go to the bathroom, although this requires a little more effort.
