Kayla could see that something was moving in the bushes. When she pushed aside the leaves, she saw six small creatures huddled together. At first, she thought they were furless bunnies, trying to stay warm.
Then Kayla made a decision: if she wanted to help those poor bunnies, she would have to do it secretly.
When she got to her room, Kayla quickly put the bunnies to bed.
Little by little, Kayla became sure that she was dealing with some baby animal, but she had no idea exactly what species it was.
Kayla felt she had no other options, so she decided she needed her mother’s help.
Erica let out a sigh. She was starting to feel like a mum. “Okay, Kayla. Let’s take them to the vet.
The journey to the vet was quiet. We weren’t sure how things would go.
They arrived at the vet’s office with the creatures still well hidden under the blanket.
Erica went to the reception desk and said, “There’s been an emergency.”
As time went on, everyone in the room became increasingly curious.
At last, the names of Kayla and Erica were called out, and everyone in the room stopped talking and looked at them.
In the vet’s office, the vet carefully took the creatures out of the box. Kayla and Erica watched in silence, their hearts beating faster.
All of a sudden, the vet stopped, his eyes opened wide, and he took a step back, looking both surprised and incredulous.
The vet suddenly turned and ran to the computer. His hands moved quickly over the keyboard, and his eyes moved quickly across the screen. But before anyone could understand what was happening, he took a step back, his face pale, and, without warning, he collapsed to the floor, unconscious. The room went wild. Nurses quickly went to help, while Kayla and Erica stood there, unable to move or speak. They were shocked by what had happened.
Then, a man from the waiting room, who said he was a doctor, pushed his way through the crowd.
He quickly knelt next to the vet. He checked the vet’s pulse and called for medical supplies in a calm and commanding voice.
At last, the vet started to wake up, making a quiet groan as he slowly came to himself.
When she finally calmed down, the vet’s first clear words were surprising and worrying: “Call animal control now!
With her hand shaking, the vet’s assistant picked up the phone and called animal control.
Two agents, dressed in uniforms and carrying equipment, entered quickly. They looked professional and were moving urgently, which made the situation seem even more dramatic.
The vet and the animal control officers met in a corner and spoke quietly to each other.
When the animal control officers started to look at the animals, everyone in the room went quiet.
“They’re baby capybaras, and they’re scarce.”
The animal control officer, knowing how worried everyone was, promised them that the capybaras would be treated and cared for properly. But it was still not clear what would happen to them.
“They were probably brought here by a smuggler,” he explained, his voice deep and authoritative.
“You were quick-witted and it was that that saved the day,” he said, full of admiration.
The vet, who was now better, smiled at Kayla and Erica and thanked them.
The conversation soon turned to the plans to return the capybaras to their natural habitat. The animal control officer explained how they would be gradually rehabilitated and released into a protected reserve.
In the weeks that followed, Kayla and Erica regularly visited the rehabilitation centre, closely following the capybaras’ progress.
